Chapter Fourteen
Nicci hated underground trains, especially crowded ones. Squashed in tight, with a sea of men in matching blue and white tops pressed around her, she felt a bit uneasy. It was uncomfortably warm and stuffy, with almost no space between bodies as more and more crammed in at every stop. There was a sweaty armpit right in front of her face as a big man with bare tattooed arms held on to the overhead rail with one hand and picked his nose with the other. Apart from a young girl of about twelve who was clinging to the back of her dadâs jacket as the train sped along, throwing everyone off balance each time it came to a stop and then lurched away again, Nicci seemed to be the only female in the whole carriage.
Was this what Mark had to put up with every match day? It was odd, but in all the years they had been together she had never gone with him to see a game, never even asked him about it except to enquire about the score, and that was more out of politeness than a real need to know. It was an area of his life she had never taken the time or trouble to share, just as he had never asked for the finer details of her girly evenings at Albieâs or her shoe-shopping trips.
In a way, it was a sign of trust. Not needing to know all the ins and outs, all the finer details of everything. The who, and the what, and the where. Why ask questions when you have no reason to doubt? But, she was beginning to realise, it was also a big red flashing sign that they had been drifting apart, not sharing things, not showing enough interest in what the other was doing. Perhaps they should have been less trusting, more curious, pried a little moreâ¦
Mark had encouraged her to go to the reunion without him, to meet up with old friends. They were mainly people he didnât know, so heâd been happy enough to stay at home, had not called or texted even once during the evening to find out what she was doing. After their last conversation before she left, she should hardly have been surprised.
It was probably why it had been so easy for her to get entangled with Jason that night. Jason who was so clearly attracted to her, who showered her with attention, and flattery, and had insisted on buying her glass after glass of the most expensive champagne the hotel had to offer. It was delicious, and decadent, andâ¦daring. Being with him had offered her a glimpse of another world. How life could be. Should be, even.
Nicci gazed blankly at the darkness beyond the window as the train rattled along. Up above, a row of advertising posters offered cheap insurance, cash for old jewellery, loans for Christmas, emergency contraception, breast enhancements, dating apps⦠Everything was about either money or sex. Sometimes both.
